Moderat - Rusty Nails
Friday 29th May, 2009
At the risk of putting people off straight away, I'm going to give this track the ridiculous tag 'emo-tronica'. Partially because I get a sick pleasure out of making up stupid genre names to annoy people, and partly because I defy anyone to listen to this record without feeling something - anything!
German duo Modeselektor have teamed up with fellow countryman Apparat for the second time - this time a full length album being the end result of their combined effort.
I've never been the biggest fan of Modeselektor. They have their places and they certainly do what they do well, it's just never really exited me that much. The (self titled) album that has come out this paring is similar in many ways - its almost all very solid bassy electronica and perfectly listenable, but only really peaks in a few places - Rusty Nails being one of them.
A mid-tempo skipping beat holds together a structure of sweeping synths and fizzing atmospherics which all underlays a glorious dual layered vocal and phasing melody.
I don't think I've stopped listening to this track since getting hold of it last week.
